Founder and President of Zieba Builders, Joe studied architecture and engineering at the University of Maryland where he received his B.S. Degree with honors in engineering in 1984. Joe worked as a civil engineer, contracted by the Department of Defense, for several years on a small atoll in the South Pacific. In 1988, Joe decided to leave engineering behind and relocate to Southern California to pursue his own company as a general contractor.
Zieba Builders was founded with a commitment to exceptional service, accountability, and craftsmanship. Joe built a network of industry experts, in both design and build, with a shared passion for perfection and precision to meet the demands of his growing general contractor business. Many of these early partners maintain a professional relationship with Joe and the Zieba Builders team today. Joe can still be found working in the field hands-on with skilled carpentry work and an eye for design and detail.
When not working on ZBI’s projects, Joe enjoys the company of his wife and two children. They spend evenings and weekends in the great outdoors, whether it be hiking, camping, sailing or wake-boarding. Joe also loves attending the kids’ sporting events and entertaining friends and family with a delicious BBQ feast in their backyard. Occasionally, he even does a little project or two for himself.
With over 20 years of award-winning experience in consultative sales, Karen is an integral part of the Zieba Builders' reputation and growth. Karen credits her success to professional integrity, commitment to discovery, establishing realistic expectations and putting the clients’ needs first.
Karen’s commitment to excellence in the home remodeling industry extends into her active service in the design-build community. She has served 6 years on the Board of Directors for the Remodeler’s Council of the Building Industry Association of Southern California, including 2 years as President where she earned the prestigious Industry Icon Award. She has also served several years as Trustee to the Board of Directors for the National Association of Home Builders/Remodelers, earning the Distinguished Service Award for Leadership.
In her free time, Karen loves the outdoors and nature, especially hiking and camping in the mountains. She also enjoys attending her children’s sporting events and being an active member of the Long Beach community. When she has a few minutes of quiet, Karen can be found relaxing in her self-designed backyard retreat reading a good book.
Angelika has always had an admiration for real estate, design and construction. She grew up with parents who loved flipping homes, with her father being a general contractor and doing all of the work himself. They would go to open houses and spend time planning renovations for the new homes. This grew into a long term passion for Angelika and she decided to gain some further experience by attending interior design school where she was able to hone in on her ability to think creatively and outside the box, while remaining detail oriented. After starting a job in the real estate finance industry, Angelika found that her skill set was in office operations. As an avid Long Beach citizen when Angelika heard that Zieba Builders needed a new Office Manager, it seemed like a match made in heaven. Here was a company who had the vision and experience that Angelika grew up loving, with an open position made for her.
In her free time, Angelika enjoys cooking meals with her family, spending time outside and in the water, whether swimming or kayaking, and skiing in the winter. She can also be found attending open houses and garage sales, or working with her mom on their home based craft business.

She moved to Long Beach, CA from Washington State a year ago. She is overjoyed to be living in the Sunshine State and to be a part of this wonderful community.

Design Director of Zieba Builders, Bill, comes with 28 years of experience in the high-end, luxury kitchen and bath industry. Bill has seen and done it all; from manufacturing engineering for a large, luxury custom cabinetry manufacturer to project management and design for well-respected, high-end kitchen and bath design studios in Los Angeles and Orange County. Through his experience, Bill gained vast experience and perspective from collaborating with Los Angeles’ top architects, designers, and builders.
For Bill, the best part of the job is space planning and reconfiguring a home. He finds joy in these puzzles, discovering an unexpected solution while honoring the original architectural design and staying on budget. Bill also enjoys hands-on work and the experience from woodworking and construction. Innovative design is often the solution to a problem, which intrigues Bill in his daily work.
When Bill isn’t busy designing projects for Zieba Builders, you can find him working on a handful of woodworking projects of his own. Otherwise, he enjoys spending time in the kitchen cooking and baking.
For Heather, design has always been a part of her life. Certainly from age nine, when she convinced her parents to hire a professional artist to hand-paint her bedroom walls, creating a look she was going for to match her furniture and accessories, Heather knew she was going to be an interior designer. A firm believer that you either have style or you don’t, she credits her intuition as her foremost inspiration. After honing her abilities at Orange Coast College, where she obtained the technical skills necessary to bring her visions to life, Heather gained invaluable real-life experience and knowledge working in the field for various design firms. From the exciting beginnings full of inspiration and creativity, to experiencing the finished fruits of her work, Heather’s favorite part of the job is experiencing her designs become reality and seeing her clients shed tears of joy upon completion.
When she is not designing dream homes, Heather is a proud dog mom to Bear and Rocco. She also has a habit of doing something pretty every weekend for inspiration, meaning you can often find her hiking picturesque trails, traveling the world, and visiting museums and exhibits. Always eager to learn new tricks of the trade, master new programs, and keep on trend, Heather’s main goal for the future is to continue growing as a designer!
The son of a master stair builder and carpenter, Darren was exposed to his father’s profession early on. Inspired by the artistic projects he saw on job sites and knowing the passion, skill, and hard work required, he caught the bug for carpentry early on.
Thoroughly impressed, Darren started working along-side and learning from his father as a teen, building high-end staircases in West LA. The nature of these projects in luxury homes further taught him extreme attention to detail and the value of hard work, as well as allowing him to sharpen his skill and hone his fine craftsmanship.
What Darren loves most about his trade is the creative aspect: the joy of building beautiful pieces with his hands, being able to stand back and admire the fruit of his labor, and constantly improving and furthering his skill on every project. When he met Joe and saw his skillful craftsmanship, it was clear Darren would be a great fit here at Zieba. Learning and constantly expanding his craft is what motivates him every day!
Eventually, Darren’s goal is to be a general contractor himself. Until then, when he is not creating beautiful pieces of art from scratch, he unwinds by playing music, snowboarding, and sailing!
As Lead Carpenter of Zieba Builders, Christian (Chris) began working in the field in 2016. Chris started out working with another remodeling company as a helper in charge of installing cabinets. Being a part of a large company helped Christian gain exposure in over twenty different trades. As a result, Chris was able to pick up all of the best trade secrets and improve on them in the field.
Zieba Builders prides itself in its exceptional craftsmanship, which is something that Chris truly takes to heart. For him, the best part of being Lead Carpenter for Zieba Builders is getting to see the final product.
When Chris isn’t busy at work with Zieba Builders he likes to spend his free time tinkering with mechanical projects, primarily fixing cars. As a Lead Carpenter, it’s no surprise that Chris’ passions outside of work are all very hands-on. He also enjoys other activities like growing exotic plants, building furniture, and playing guitar.
It is Chris’ dream to become a business owner one day. With an ambitious and entrepreneurial mindset, there’s no telling what Chris will have to offer the world. Until then, we continue to look forward to everything Chris brings to Zieba Builders!
As the Carpenter’s Helper of Zieba Builders, Guillermo first began working in construction in a pre-apprenticeship program. Here, Guillermo learned the basics then continued his growth with the Union Brotherhood of Carpenters, where he did framing for four months. Guillermo is constantly seeking continuing education and programs to help train him and build his knowledge of the construction industry to continue learning and growing.
Guillermo is self-motivated, and it shows in his constant thirst for learning as much as he can about construction. It’s clear that Guillermo is exactly where he is supposed to be. His favorite part of the job is the entire building process, the people, and the construction atmosphere’s environment. For Guillermo, it’s the passion that rubs off on each individual and the feeling of being united in a way to complete a vision for a project that leaves him feeling a fantastic sense of accomplishment that he gets to share with the entire Zieba Builders team!
Outside of hands-on training and additional education, Guillermo spends his free time enjoying the finer things in life, which for him include photography and writing. He also enjoys spending quality time with his family and friends and is always up for a great hike.
Guillermo plans to continue pursuing his career in construction as far down the path as it takes him. It’s his ultimate dream to be able to bring to life the vision and final creation of his family’s dream home. Until then, we look forward to each and every day with Guillermo and all that he brings to Zieba Builders!
